California vet donates services to care for soldier’s dog

Oh, that we all could be this generous!

When Petaluma, CA serviceman Brett McIsaac was preparing to ship out to Afghanistan, he was concerned about his dog Bud and Bud’s upcoming surgery.

There was only one problem: after McIsaac shipped out, his family found out that the surgery was going to more extensive – and expensive – than McIsaac or his parents, who were caring for the dog, had expected.

That’s when veterinarian Russ Gurevitch offered to do the surgery pro bono. Petaluma360.com reports that Dr. Gurevitch told McIsaac’s mother, ” “If Brett can go to Afghanistan for his country, the least I can do is help his dog.”

Thanks, Dr. Gurevitch!

Makes you wonder – what can you to help care for the pet of serviceman or woman serving in Afghanistan? Foster an animal? Donate food? Cover a vet bill?

You can read the whole story at Petaluma360.com.

Just one of the cats waiting for a new home during Rochester Animal Services' "no fee" cat adoption day

Today was “no fee” adoption day at Rochester Animal Services, and it was a meowing success!

The doors opened at 10 AM and by 11:30, 29 cats had been adopted. By the close of the day, 42 cats had found homes. That was every adoptable cat except one. She wasn’t a free cat, but I’m confident she’ll find a home soon.

YAY! Here are some pictures from the day: Continue reading

October is Adopt A Dog Month

October is the American Humane Association’s Adopt-A-Dog Month!  Local shelter and rescue groups will be celebrating all month, encouraging families looking for a pet to consider adopting a shelter dog.

And Lollypop Farm is continuing their Adoption Challenge, which ends in October, hoping to adopt out 500 more dogs and cats than last year at this time. Local pit bull rescue group fights “dangerous breed” myths

Sandy is just one of the pit bulls looking for a forever home through Rochester's Pitty Love Rescue.

With the release this week of Jim Gorant’s new book, “The Lost Dogs: Michael Vick’s Dogs and Their Tale of Rescue and Redemption,” the spotlight is back again on the 49 pit bulls rescued after Vick was charged with animal cruelty for running a dogfighting operation.

In many communities, including Rochester, NY, pit bulls fall into the “dangerous breed” category. Pit bulls impounded and not reclaimed by their owners are euthanized instead of being evaluated for adoption. But as Gorant shows in his book, it is possible to rehabilitate a pit bull.

And the fight to change public perception about pit bulls and other so-called dangerous dog breeds is taking place right here in Rochester, NY, with the responsible pit bull rescue group Pitty Love Rescue. Continue reading
